老子第十一章より

原文
三十輻共一轂。當其無、有車之用。埏埴以爲器。當其無、有器之用。鑿戸牖以爲室。當其無、有室之用。故有之以爲利、無之以爲用。

現代語訳
車輪というものは三十本の輻(や)が真ん中の轂(こしき)に集まって出来ている。その轂に車軸を通す穴があいているからこそ車輪としての用を為すのだ。器を作るときには粘土をこねて作る。その器に何もない空間があってこそ器としての用を為すのだ。戸や窓をくりぬいて家は出来ている。その家の何もない空間こそが家としての用を為しているのだ。だから何かが「有る」という事で利益が得られるのは、「無い」という事が影でその効用を発揮しているからなのだ。

英訳文
A wheel has thirty spokes and one hub. We can use a wheel because a hub has a hole to insert an axle. We knead clay and make a vessel. We can use a vessel because it has a space with nothing. A house has doors and windows. We can live in a house because it has a space with nothing. So when we use something, we always benefit by “nothing”.
